The second portion of the restoration work involved the sanctuary. The 1960’s free-standing altar was removed and the high altar and side altars were restored to their original positions.  Stairs were added to accommodate the traditional ascent into the “holy of holies” at the beginning of Mass.  The sanctuary floor—extended in the 1960’s with concrete and raised several inches--was removed and floors of the sanctuary and nave were tiled to match the tile in the narthex.

involved the removal of the crumbling mosaic ceiling above the sanctuary and painting of the interior of the sanctuary.  The blue dome of the sanctuary reflects the dome of heaven. Subtle color added to statuary complements the sparkling marble and gold of the altars and ceiling.
