Canons Annual Retreat With Prior General
Posted in General on June 30, 2018

The advice of Saint Francis de Sales concerning a yearly retreat is well known: “There is no clock, however good, but must be continually wound up; and moreover, during the course of each year it will need taking to pieces, to cleanse away the rust which clogs it, to straighten bent works, and renew such as are worn. Even so, anyone who really cares for his heart's devotion will wind it up to God night and morning, and examine into its condition, correcting and improving it; and at least once a year he will take the works to pieces and examine them carefully.” This advice, which is wise and necessary for devout laymen, is even more important for priests. Thus, the importance of the annual priestly retreat, an obligation of canon law, which the priests of the Institute are very happy to fulfil every year.

This year the annual retreat for the canons of the American province of the Institute was held once again at Saint Francis de Sales Oratory in mid-June. The abundance of available altars in the magnificent church as well as the lodgings in the spacious adjacent convent building make the Oratory an ideal setting for the annual retreat. Our prior general, Monsignor Gilles Wach, led the retreat for the priests of the province during his annual visit to our American apostolates.

Since the Christian life is essentially the imitation of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and since the priest by his ordination is ontologically an alter Christus, “another Christ,” the instructions this year focused on the different aspects of the mystery of Jesus Christ, the God-man. Since a priest is the mediator between God and man, Jesus Christ, by reason of His Incarnation which joins the divine and human natures in one person, is by his very being the priest par excellence. The retreat instructions focused especially on the meekness and the prayer of Our Lord.

The retreat began with the invocation of the Holy Ghost during a Eucharistic holy hour; during the week, the canons were able to balance private prayer with the communal singing of the Divine Office, not to mention finding time for rest – an essential part of a good retreat from a busy assignment! The week of liturgical prayer culminated with a solemn votive Mass in honor of Jesus Christ Eternal High Priest. After Mass, the “grand silence” of the retreat was over, and the priests were happy to be able to socialize with many of the faithful of the Saint Louis apostolate. The evening concluded with a festive fraternal banquet, which enabled the canons to catch up with their confreres from across the country.
