Pilgrimage to Lourdes
On March 29-30, the Institute of Christ the King conducted a pilgrimage to Lourdes in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady there. The superiors, seminarians, and sisters of the Institute came en masse from Gricigliano, along with many of the Institute's priests from France, led by their Provincial Superior, Abbé Benoît Jayr. They were all joined by a great number of friends and faithful from France, Ireland, Italy, and the United States. The two days were filled with private and scheduled devotions, including the Rosary, Way of the Cross, and an impressive candle procession Saturday evening. Solemn High Masses were celebrated in the upper basilica chapel, which was filled to capacity. On Saturday, the celebrant was Vicar General Msgr. Michael Schmitz, while Msgr. Gilles Wach, Prior General, offered Mass that Divine Mercy Sunday. The Rector of the Shrine, Father Raymond Zambelli, greeted the pilgrims with a warm welcoming speech. View Images

Monthly Devotion to the Infant King at the Shrine of Christ the King, Chicago

The 25th of each month is a day traditionally dedicated to the Infant Jesus, in remembrance of His Incarnation and Nativity. At the Shrine of Christ the King the novena to the Infant Jesus from the 17th to the 25th is said every month. Starting in January, on the closing day of the novena, the 25th, there will be a Votive Mass of the Nativity at the Shrine at 7:00 pm, followed by Adoration and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

On Saturday, Decemer 29th, His Eminence Francis Cardinal George came to the Shrine of Christ the King to solemnly crown the statue of the Divine Infant King. The rare ceremony occurred during a Solemn High Mass celebrated by Msgr. R. Michael Schmitz, at which His Eminence assisted. Traditional Latin Mass returns to Cathedral of Mexico City

On Thursday, November 29th, 2007, Msgr. R. Michael Schmitz celebrated High Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City, the crowning moment of a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After forty years, the Mass of Ages returned to the capital of the a people who, not so long ago, heroically shed their blood for Cristo Rey. More information and images.

 

Milwaukee, Institute's New Apostolate Location

The Most Rev. Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of Milwaukee, has graciously invited the Institute of Christ the King to serve the Latin Mass apostolate in his archdiocese. Priests of the Institute will be offering Sunday Mass at St. Stanislaus Church starting in Advent. Many thanks to His Grace, as well as to the Franciscan Fathers at St. Stanislaus.

 

Silver Jubilee of Monsignor Schmitz's Ordination
On October 10th, 2007, Msgr. R. Michael Schmitz, Vicar General of the Institute of Christ the King and its Provincial Superior for the United States, will be celebrating the twety-fifth anniversary of his ordination to the Holy Priesthood. Monsignor Schmitz was ordained in Rome on October 10th, 1982, by then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. From the Archdiocese of Cologne, he entered the German College in Rome in 1976, and pursued his seminary and graduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, earning a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology in 1988. Subsequently, in 1992, he received a Licentiate in Canon Law from Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. Pope John Paul II elevated him to the rank of Chaplain of His Holiness in 1998. Monsignor Schmitz is a member of the Academy of Theology in Rome since 1988 and a chaplain of the Sovereign Order of Malta.

A friend of the founders of the Institute of Christ the King, Monsignor Gilles Wach and Father Philippe Mora, Monsignor Schmitz collaborated with the Institute as visiting professor at its seminary, eventually founding its German Province. He was incardinated into the Institute in September 2000 and was appointed its Vicar General that same year, also taking on the responsbility of Provincial Superior for the United States.

Please keep Monsignor Michael Schmitz in your prayers, especially on the 10th, the day of his Ordination, and the 11th, the day of his first Holy Mass.

On September, 14th, the day the Holy Father's motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum, came into effect, H.E. Dario Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, President of the Pontificial Commission Ecclesia Dei, celebrated Holy Mass according to the extraordinary use at the Sanctuary of Loreto, assisted by priests of the Institute of Christ the King. Forty Hours' Devotion at the Shrine of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, in Thanksgiving for Summorum Pontificum

September 14th - 16th, 2007

Starting with High Mass at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 14th, at the Shrine of Christ the King Sovereign Priest in Chicago, the Institute of Christ the King held a Forty Hours' Devotion in thanksgiving for the Holy Father's motu proprio on the old form of the Latin Liturgy, Summorum Pontificum. The three days of Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament took place inside the magnificent church building on the south side of Chicago, still under restoration. This marked the first time that Holy Mass was offered there since the building's closure in 2002 and threatened demolition, and the first time Mass in the traditional form of the Latin Rite since 1969. (Mass is normally offered at a chapel in the adjacent rectory.) For more images.

First Priestly Ordinations of the Institute in the United States

On June 15th, 2007, His Grace Archbishop Raymond Burke ordained two deacons of the Institute to the priesthood. The ordination took place at the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis. This marks the first time priestly ordinations of the Institute are conducted in the United States. More than 1200 attended the impressively beautiful ceremony which imperceptibly lasted four hours.

On the following day, Saturday, June 16th, Father Matthew Talarico celebrated his first Mass at St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis, and on Sunday, June 17th, was the first Mass of Father William Avis, also at the Oratory.

New Institute Apostolate in West Orange, New Jersey

With the gracious permission of the Archbishop of Newark, the Most Reverend John Myers, the Institute of Christ the King will be assigning a priest to the Latin Mass Community at St. Anthony of Padua Chapel in West Orange, Newark- New Jersey. Father Matthew Talarico, one of our newly ordained priests, has been appointed Rector of the Chapel by Archbishop Myers. Father Talarico, who has already gained good experience serving as deacon in other Institute apostolates and in carrying out many responsibilities in the Seminary, will begin his work on July 17th.

For the time being, Father Andreas Hellmann, Prior of the Institute’s House in Chicago, replaces Father Talarico, as well as Father Richard Munkelt, who is a priest in residence. Father Talarico will celebrate his first Sunday Masses on July 22nd, followed by the “First blessing” of a newly ordained Priest. All are welcome!

Members of the Institute in the United States receive their Choir Habit

On the even of the priestly Ordinations which took place in St. Louis (see above), June 14th, 2007, an investiture ceremony followed by a Solemn High Mass was held at St. Francis de Sales Oratory, when members of the Institute of Christ the King serving in the United States solemnly received their choir habit. The habit was originally bestowed upon the Institute of Christ the King on August 31, 2006, by His Eminence, Ennio Cardinal Antonelli, Archbishop of Florence, the hierarchical superior of the Institute.

Solemn High Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite at Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis

On Wednesday, March 7th, a Solemn High Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite was celebrated in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis by members of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest in commemoration of the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, co-patron of the Institute. The main celebrant was Father Karl Lenhardt, Rector of St. Francis de Sales Oratory (the Institute’s apostolate in St. Louis), assisted by Father Jacques Fournier as deacon, and Abbé William Avis, as sub-deacon, also members of the Oratory.

Among the several clergy of St. Louis in attendance were Bishop Robert Hermann, Auxiliary in St. Louis, Msgr. Joseph Pins, rector of the Cathedral Basilica, Msgr. Henry Breier, personal secretary and Master of Ceremonies of His Grace, Archbishop Raymond Burke, and Father Thomas Keller, professor of liturgy at Kendrick-Glennon Seminary and Master of Ceremonies of the Cathedral.

The great beauty of the Solemn High Mass was enhanced by the participation of the Choir of the Cathedral Basilica, under the direction of organist and Choir Master Dr. John Romeri, with music by renaissance composers Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Josquin de Près, Tomás Luis de Victoria, as well as by former director of the Sistine Chapel, Monsignor Bartolucci.

Five hundred faithful were in attendance at this event, which was the first Solemn Mass at the high altar of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis in forty two years.

New Apostolate in California

On the Feast of the Epiphany, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is charged with a new apostolate in California, by the gracious invitation of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Patrick J. McGrath, Bishop of San Jose. The Chapel of the Mother of Perpetual Help, now granted the status of an Oratory, will be functioning under Father Michael Wiener, Rector, who is also Episcopal Delegate for the Rite of 1962 in the Diocese of Oakland. Cable channel Fox channel aired a piece on the Traditional Latin Mass on Christmas Day, during the Fox Report. The segment commented on the growth of the Traditional Latin Mass, focusing on the Institute's Shrine of Christ the King in Chicago. The same piece was broadcast on local Fox channels in Chicago and St. Louis.

Archbishop Burke celebrates Pontifical High Mass at St. Francis de Sales

Oratory on its First Anniversary

A Pontifical High Mass in commemoration of the first anniversary of the canonical erection of St. Francis de Sales Oratory was celebrated by the Most Reverend Raymond L. Burke, Archbishop of St. Louis, on Sunday, July 16th. On this occasion, His Grace also solemnly installed a relic of St. Prosper at the side Altar of Our Lady. St. Prosper, a 5th century saint, coined the phrase "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi." This was the closing Mass of the National Convention of the Latin Liturgy Association, which took place at St. Francis de Sales Oratory that weekend. Images

On Friday, June 30th was the "Vestition", when first year seminarians receive their cassock; on Saturday, July 1st was the conferring of the tonsure, by His Excellency Bishop Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago; on Sunday, July 2nd, was the conferring of minor orders by His Excellency Bishop Mathieu Madega, of Port-Gentil, Gabon; on Monday, July 3rd, at 4:30 pm was the ordination of deacons and subdeacons by His Excellency Bishop Luciano Giovanetti, Bishop of Fiesole, Italy; and on Tuesday, July 4th at 4:30 pm priestly ordination was conferred by His Grace Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, of St. Louis. On Wednesday, July 5th the solemn Te Deum was sung in thanksgiving.

 

Institute in Chicago receives Decree of Erection as Shrine

His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, 23rd June 2006,  issued the official decree of erection of the Institute’s church in Chicago as the Shrine of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. We are very grateful to His Eminence for allowing this Shrine, the first exclusively dedicated to the Traditional Latin Mass worldwide. The decree includes express permission for the celebration of all the Sacraments in the Traditional Rite, as well as the keeping of registers.

 

First Corpus Christi Procession in Chicago

On Sunday, June 18th, on the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi, was held the first Solemn Procession in the Institute's apostolate in Chicago. It was a very special occasion, as it was not only the first procession, but also the first use of our still-gutted church  since the Institute of Christ the King arrived in Chicago. The procession commenced at the basement-chapel in the priory building where Mass is currently offered, from where Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament was solemnly carried to the street and into the church, for a very moving Benediction. Monsignor R. Michael Schmitz on Relevant Radio

Msgr. R. Michael Schmitz, Vicar General of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, was interviewed on Relevant Radio's "Morning Air" on Monday, 22 May. On that same day, Monsignor Schmitz also celebrated Holy Mass at the Radio's station new chapel. This Mass was later broadcast during the Catholic radio network regular broadcast time of daily Mass, at 8:30 pm CET. Listen to interview.

On Saturday, May 6th, Dr. Alice von Hildebrand, a lont time friend of the Institute of Christ the King, gave a conference at the Institute's headquarters in Chicago on the true role of women in society and the Church. The large crowd of attendees from not only the greater Chicago area, but from in- and out-of-state, were treated to a thought-provoking as well as entertaining analysis of certain currents of throught on the nature of women. Tenth Annual Latin Mass Seminar in Rockford

The Tenth Annual Spring Seminar of the Latin Mass Community of Rockford took place on Friday, May 26th, and Saturday, May 27th at St. Mary's Oratory of the Institute of Christ the King. With a series of talks by Monsignor Michael Schmitz, and several opportunities for discussions, the event closed with a banquet in honor of this year's award winner, Mr. John Blewett, Managing Editor of The Latin Mass magazine. On the following Sunday, there was a luncheon commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Ordination of Father Brian Bovee, rector of the Institute's St. Mary Oratory in Rockford. Benefit Concert to aid the Institute’s Mission in Gabon

On Friday, 10 February 2006, at 7:00 pm there was a Benefit Concert of contemporary jazz in the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to benefit the African missions of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. This concert, sponsored by faithful of St. Joseph’s Oratory in Green Bay, featured Richard Davis, symphonic string bassist and jazz musician from Madison, and Nadi Qamar, member of St. Joseph’s Oratory. Proceeds from this concert will go to help build a school at the Institute’s mission in Mayumba, Gabon. Those wishing to contribute may contact Father Jean-Marie Moreau, 920-437-9660.

 

Confirmations in Oakland, California

On December 10th, 2005, thirty-three young faithfulof the Institute's apostolate in Oakland, California, received the sacrament of Confirmation from His Excellency Bishop Allen H. Vigneron, who offered a Pontifical Mass following the conferral.

 

Confirmations in Rockford, Illinois

On December 2nd, 2005, His Excellency Bishop Thomas G. Doran conferred the sacrament of Confirmation on 144 faithful of St. Mary's Oratory in Rockford, Illinois.

 

Traditional Christmas Midnight Mass on Nationwide Radio

On Christmas, the U.S. Catholic radio network Relevant Radio provided live transmission of the Midnight Mass from St. Joseph’s Oratory, the Institute of Christ the King’s apostolate in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Vocations at the Sisters Adorers of the Royal Heart

On October 31st, 2005, His Eminence Ennio Cardinal Antonelli, Metropolitan Archbishop of Florence, presided over the clothing of Miss Anne-Charlotte d'Aprigny, now Sister Charlotte-Marie de Sales, at the Institute's headquarters in Gricigliano, Italy. Present at the ceremony, at which also were received three postulants, was His Eminence Moussa Cardinal Daoud, Prefect for the Congregation of the Oriental Churches.

The Institute of Christ the King now in Kansas City

Kansas City, Missouri, now has a daily Latin Mass, as the Kansas City Latin Mass Community has been assigned a priest of the Institute of Christ the King as their chaplain, by gracious invitation of the Most Rev. Robert W. Finn, Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph. On October 9th, 2005 the Institute’s inaugural Mass was celebrated by Father Denis Buchholz, pro-rector of the apostolate in Kansas City, who was introduced by Msgr. Michael Schmitz, Vicar General of the Institute, and welcomed by the Most Reverend Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph. Temporarily functioning at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, the apostolate will be moved to Old St. Patrick’s once needed renovations are completed. The task of restoring the historic church building, dating of 1874, has just begun.

Confirmations at St. Francis de Sales

On Saturday, October 15th, 2005, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on thirty-four candidates at St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis. It was the occasion of His Grace's first official visitation to the Oratory.

St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis is Established

Upon the re-structuring of the South City Deanery of St. Louis, Missouri, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke has assigned the church of St. Francis de Sales, known as “the cathedral of South St. Louis” to the care of the Institute of Christ the King, establishing it as an Oratory. Since January 2005 the Institute had pastoral charge of the Latin Mass Apostolate of St. Louis, located at St. Agatha’s Church, which, as of July 1st, 2005, is now transferred to St. Francis de Sales Oratory. Besides administering the sacraments and attending to the needs of the faithful of the Oratory, the Institute will operate its pre-seminary program at this location, where candidates from the United States will come for the first steps in their formation before entering the seminary at the Institute’s motherhouse in Gricigliano, Italy.

On the Feast of Sts. Peter & Paul, June 29th, 2005, Most Rev. Raymond Burke, Archbishop of St. Louis, ordained three priests of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, at their seminary in Gricigliano, Italy.
