Troops of St. George Great Smoky Mountain Trip

2023 07 Troops Trip5
The fathers and sons of Troop 1683 enjoyed a private tour of the newly-built Cathedral of the Diocese of Knoxville

Each year, the senior cadets of our local Troops of Saint George apostolate—Troop 1683 Holy Name of Mary—embark on an overnight trip to a far-off location that thematically ties back to the mission of our group: To develop young Milwaukee-area boys into heroic Catholic gentlemen ready for spiritual combat using the outdoors, Blessed Sacrament, and Holy Name of Mary.

In years past we have taken the boys on a canoeing trip; a visit to Gettysburg and Memorial of Flight 93 (PA); a monastery and dude ranch in Oklahoma; and for this year’s event – a trip to Tennessee and Kentucky for a “Great Smoky Mountain Tour.”

Our trips—three nights and four days—include carpooling and activities in various cities along the journey. This trip included a trip up the Smoky Mountains; a tour of a fort built in the late 1800s; a visit to Oak Ridge where the atomic bomb was developed; numerous cathedrals, shrines, and other church buildings; and a recreational visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum and a bourbon distillery.

The boys that attend this trip, along with our Chaplain Jousseaume, enjoy the rich history of our country as it relates to the Catholicity of our founding – all coupled with daily Mass, confession, and spiritual talks along the way. Tales will be told for years about the camaraderie, enjoyment, and bonding between the Catholic fathers and sons of Troop 1683!
