The Institute celebrated a beautiful and moving first Christmas at the newest apostolate in the United States, St. Joseph Oratory in Detroit.  Canon Michael Stein and Deacon Jonathon Fehrenbacher are grateful for the faithful who worked so diligently with them to prepare for Christmas, including the volunteers who cleaned and decorated the church, rectory, and hall; the St. Joseph Cappella, Chant Schola, trumpeter, and music director Michael Semaan; and those serving at the altar.

On Christmas Eve, people began filling the pews of the peaceful, low-lit church even before Confessions started at 11:00 pm.  The choral prelude commenced at 11:15 pm with a lovely arrangement of Veni, Veni, Emmanuel and then three settings of the Ave Maria by Franck, de Victoria, and Elgar.  Following a series of stirring Christmas solos, the choir finished the prelude with an a cappella Flos de radice Jesse.

At the sound of the bell at Midnight, the exquisite Procession with the Christ Child commenced, with the choir singing Stille Nacht in German.  After the Blessing of the Crèche was the Procession to the altar accompanied by Adeste Fideles, then the Solemn High Mass began.  The men chanted the propers, the choir sang de Victoria’s glorious Missa O Magnum Mysterium and accompanying motet, and at Communion Ave Verum Corpus by Elgar and a soprano solo of Laudamus Te by Mozart.  As with the opening hymn, the trumpet and organ accompanied Hark! The Herald Angels Sing for a truly joyful sound.

After Midnight Mass a lively crowd enjoyed a Hot Cocoa Social in the hall, with panettone generously offered by the historic and vibrant Eastern Market across the road from St. Joseph Oratory. Parishioners and guests exchanged Christmas greetings and made new friends on this holy night.

Christmas Day continued with a 9:00 am Low Mass of Dawn, 11:00 am Solemn High Mass of the Day, and 6:00 pm Vespers and Benediction.  St. Joseph Oratory was blessed with many parishioners and visitors at the three Christmas Masses, and mild weather to ease their winter travel.  Many people commented how touched they were by the sacred, mysterious beauty of the liturgies and the music.  Christ our Savior and Light is born in the dark of the night!  May the Christ Child strengthen St. Joseph Oratory in the new year to shine as a light in Detroit through Sacred Liturgy and Arts.

The initial invitation to the Institute by an American Bishop came from His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, then Bishop of La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1996. Since then the Institute has been called by Bishops in twelve other Dioceses to found spiritual centers where Holy Mass is celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, the doctrine of the Church and the spirituality of St Francis de Sales are taught and explained to people of all ages, and Catholic culture is revived by the beauty of the arts and the charity of social life.

This calendar traces the individual story of these Institute apostolates in chronological order throughout the past twenty years. Offered in grateful thanksgiving to Christ the Infant King, this calendar includes many photos of the Institute’s apostolic work across the United States in the hope that you may be inspired to pray for the spiritual fruits of this mission.

On Saturday, November 12, the clergy and faithful of St. Francis de Sales Oratory were honored by the presence of His Grace the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of Saint Louis.  His Grace conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 42 youth and 3 adults.  He was assisted by Canon Jean-Baptiste Commins and Father Eric Kunz as chaplains, and by Canon David Silvey and Abbé Alex Barga as masters of ceremonies.  Reverend Canon Matthew Talarico, provincial superior, and Reverend Canon Michael Wiener, rector of St. Francis de Sales Oratory, were present at the ceremony.

His Grace gave a powerful sermon on the invocation “Come, Holy Ghost.”  He made reference to the increasing degradation of secular culture, and the necessity for Catholics to grow in their Faith in order to act as soldiers of Christ in the modern world.  Catholics need to fortify themselves in the Holy Ghost in order to give an example of virtue to the secular culture.

After the confirmations, His Grace assisted at the Solemn High Mass celebrated Canon Michael Wiener.  All at St. Francis de Sales Oratory were grateful to the team of altars boys which served the sacred liturgies, as well as to Mr. Nicholas Botkins and the Oratory choir, in particular for their rendition of Victoria’s O Quam Gloriosam Mass setting.

Mass was followed by a joyful reception with the confirmed and their families and friends.  The faithful of the Oratory had a chance greet and thank Archbishop Carlson for his pastoral solicitude for the Oratory community.  The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest thanks His Grace for his continued support of our work in St. Louis.

Deo gratias for the many blessings received!

After a much-needed refreshing rain on Friday, God blessed the day of Confirmation with a California-blue sky. On Saturday October 15, forty-one candidates received the sacrament of Confirmation from His Excellency, the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, at St. Margaret Mary Church, Oakland. Reverend Canon William Avis, Rector of the Oratory of St. Gianna in Tucson, served as Master of Ceremonies.

Bishop Barber gave St. Philip Neri to the 2016 confirmandi as an example. He described how the saint's heart was physically enlarged because of his love for God and how this was to be an example for us, to love God with great devotion and fervor. The bishop also talked about the challenges which young people encounter in our days. He spoke about the word “Fear," which is often accompanied by anxieties and worries that paralyze the vigor of our spiritual life. He said that we need to remember this: What effect did the descent of the Holy Ghost have upon the Apostles? They were truly confirmed, and their will came entirely under the sway of the Holy Ghost so that they fearlessly preached the Gospel to the world. The Holy Ghost takes away fear and makes us firm in our faith.  Not only confirmands but all present at the Confirmation were encouraged and strengthened by Bishop Barber's words, which were spoken with episcopal authority with his miter on his head and crosier in hand.

After Confirmation, in the presence of His Excellency, a Solemn High Mass was celebrated by the Reverend Canon Matthew Talarico, the Provincial of the Institute for the U.S., assisted by Canon Raphael Ueda from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory, San Jose, as deacon, and Abbé Kevin Kerscher from St. Margaret Mary Church, Oakland, as subdeacon. At the Mass, the confirmands, their sponsors, their parents, and their friends altogether praised and thanked the Lord for the graces of Confirmation.

The celebration concluded with a reception after Mass in the church hall, where Reverend Canon Olivier Meney, as the Institute priest responsible for the Oakland apostolate, welcomed all participants in this beautiful event. A bountiful and festive dinner was prepared by the confirmands' families. All enjoyed the refreshment and the warm fellowship.  Thanks be to God for this wonderful day!

His Excellency Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson, Arizona, visited St. Gianna Oratory and Holy Family Parish for Confirmations.   The Confirmations and Low Mass of a Bishop took place on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00p.m. During this ceremony the Bishop administered the sacrament of confirmation to 30 people. The ages of those who were confirmed varied between 11 and 84. This included Mrs. Alberta Sasaki who recently converted to the Catholic Faith.

Canon Matthew Talarico, Provincial Superior and Canon William Avis, Rector of St. Gianna Oratory and Administrator of Holy Family Parish served as Chaplains to the Bishop. Abbe Matthew O'Hora, Clerical Oblate based in Tucson acted as Master of Ceremonies.  Afterwards there was a celebration social in the Church Basement, during which a presentation and word of thanks was made to His Excellency Bishop Kicanas.

Most of these confirmation candidates have been a part of our weekly Confirmation Preparation classes for the last two years. A special word of thanks is due to the teachers who prepared them. Namely, Mrs. Gina Hann, Mrs. Sylvia Cordova, and Mrs. Ana Aranda.

We continue to pray for those who have been confirmed and ask God to keep them strong in their faith!

The Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Chicago, conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation upon fifteen young people from the Shrine of Christ the King on Saturday, October 22. This sacramental celebration took place in the spacious St. Thomas the Apostle Church located near the fire-damaged Shrine (special thanks to the pastor, Father Elias O’Brien O. Carm). Following the Confirmations, Bishop Perry celebrated solemn Pontifical votive Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Renaissance choral music and Gregorian Chant. With deep appreciation, the Institute of Christ the King thanks His Excellency, Bishop Perry, for his continual support of its growing apostolate at the Shrine. Congratulations to the newly-confirmed!
