Historic Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish Entrusted By Bishop of Bridgeport to Institute of Christ the King

At the invitation of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut, a new Oratory of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has been established at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Bridgeport on the Feast of the Holy Rosary, October 7, 2017.

The retiring Pastor, the beloved Monsignor Joseph Pekar, has served the Parish faithfully as Pastor since 1971. The pastoral care and administration of the Parish has now entrusted to the Institute clergy, who will continue the celebration of the traditional Roman Liturgy of 1962 according to the long-standing tradition of this Parish.

The new Oratory Rector appointed by Bishop Caggiano to serve at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish is Canon Andrew Todd. He will be assisted for the first year by an Institute seminarian, Abbe Bryan Silvey.

The first Mass of this new Oratory was celebrated on Sunday, October 8, at 10:15am. His Excellency, Bishop Caggiano presided the ceremonial rite of installation for the new Rector and preached the homily. The Diocesan Vicar General, Monsignor Thomas Powers, and the Vicar for Clergy, Father Joseph Marcello, and Father Cyprian LaPastina, Pastor of St. Mary’s in Greenwich, were all present for the occasion. The Institute’s Vicar General, Monsignor Michael Schmitz, attended and publicly expressed gratitude to Bishop Caggiano for the invitation to serve in Bridgeport. The Provincial Superior for the American Province, Canon Matthew Talarico, as well as Canon Brian Bovee and Abbe Francis Bennell from the Institute’s Oratory of St. Anthony of Padua in West Orange, New Jersey, came to participate in the celebration.

After the Liturgy, many faithful and friends gathered for the social in the parish hall in order to welcome the Institute and to offer grateful tribute to Monsignor Pekar for his priestly dedication and pastoral leadership at Sts. Cyril and Methodius for over 46 years.

With the help of God and the prayerful support of His people, the Institute seeks to carry on the Catholic life and tradition of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish. The Oratory is to be a unique spiritual home offering the traditional Roman liturgy, devotions, daily confessions, days of recollection in the spirit of St. Francis de Sales, classes in spirituality and doctrine, and youth formation activities among others.

For more information, a new website for Sts. Cyril and Methodius will be forthcoming at: http://www.institute-christ-king.org/bridgeport. For more information on the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, visit www.institute-christ-king.org.

On Saturday, February 18th, the Canons and faithful Old St. Patrick Oratory welcomed His Excellency, the Most Reverend James V. On this occasion, His Excellency came to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation with the assistance of Canon Talarico, Provincial Superior of the Institute in the U.S., Canon Glenn Gardner, Vice-Rector of Old St. Patrick Oratory and Canon William Avis, Master of Ceremonies for the American province. We were honored with the presence of two diocesan priests, Frs. Joseph Totton and Evan Harkins who served as “familiares”, as well as Fr. Lawrence Carney, and Deacon Ralph Wehner, diocesan MC and assistant to the bishop who took their place ‘in choro”.

After delivering a sermon on the importance of the unique work of the Holy Ghost in the lives of every Christian and especially His power to strengthen in faith and transform us more and more into the image of Christ, His Excellency invoked the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost and anointed each of the 27 confirmandi, saying "Signo te signo Crucis...I sign thee with the Sign of the Cross and confirm thee in the Chrism of Salvation..." Following the Rite of Confirmation, His Excellency officiated at the Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament.  Afterwards a festive reception was held at the Catholic Center to honor our Bishop and to offer our congratulations to the newly confirmed.

The Canons of the Institute and the faithful of Old Saint Patrick Oratory are greatly thankful towards His Excellency. May the newly confirmed correspond faithfully to the graces they received in this Sacrament and pray daily for Bishop Johnston.

We have been very blessed by the visit of our beloved Bishop, the Most Reverend David L. Ricken, who conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 34 of our young faithful at St. Patrick’s Oratory in Green Bay on the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, January 29, 2017. We are profoundly grateful and appreciative to His Excellency for administering the sacrament which has made so many more soldiers for Christ. Likewise, we were extremely honored that His Excellency joined us for the reception and banquet which followed the Liturgy.

In his remarks, Bishop Ricken congratulated the parents for a job well done. They persevered in the proper religious training of their children so that they could receive this important Sacrament most worthily. His Excellency also congratulated the confirmands, of course! They may be called upon not only to help spread the faith, but to openly profess and defend it as well. Shine in the darkness!

The whole St. Patrick’s Oratory community worked together for the beauty of the church on this special day. We thank the servers, choir, and all of those who contributed their time and efforts for the celebration of the Solemn High Mass which followed the Confirmation ceremony. We likewise appreciate the hard work and talent of our volunteers who prepared the lovely reception and banquet. Thank you to all those who helped in any capacity!

On behalf of His Holiness, Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Milwaukee, the Most Reverend Jerome Listecki, conferred upon Abbé George Baird, clerical oblate of the Institute, the papal medal "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.” This decoration of honor by the Holy See was bestowed upon Abbé George Baird in recognition of his outstanding work as the project manager for the restoration of Saint Stanislaus Church in Milwaukee. For the past several years leading up to the 150th anniversary of St. Stanislaus Parish in September, 2016, Abbé George had organized and directed the contractors for the major renovations and improvements to this historic church. He also had accomplished many on the practical tasks of this work with his own hands on experience and energetic talent.

Very pleased with the beautiful results of this successful restoration project, several hundred faithful attended the ceremony in the parish hall of St. Stanislaus on Sunday, December 4, to offer their thankful gratitude to Abbé George as Archbishop Listecki graciously presented him with this papal honor.

Clerical oblates are brothers in the family of the institute who live in community with the canons, praying together various parts of the Divine Office. Formation in the Liturgy and the spirituality of St Francis de Sales, dedication of one's talents for the practical tasks of the apostolate, and fraternity with confreres and the lay faithful are integral aspects of this life of service to Christ and His Church.

On Saturday, November 12, the clergy and faithful of St. Francis de Sales Oratory were honored by the presence of His Grace the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of Saint Louis.  His Grace conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 42 youth and 3 adults.  He was assisted by Canon Jean-Baptiste Commins and Father Eric Kunz as chaplains, and by Canon David Silvey and Abbé Alex Barga as masters of ceremonies.  Reverend Canon Matthew Talarico, provincial superior, and Reverend Canon Michael Wiener, rector of St. Francis de Sales Oratory, were present at the ceremony.

His Grace gave a powerful sermon on the invocation “Come, Holy Ghost.”  He made reference to the increasing degradation of secular culture, and the necessity for Catholics to grow in their Faith in order to act as soldiers of Christ in the modern world.  Catholics need to fortify themselves in the Holy Ghost in order to give an example of virtue to the secular culture.

After the confirmations, His Grace assisted at the Solemn High Mass celebrated Canon Michael Wiener.  All at St. Francis de Sales Oratory were grateful to the team of altars boys which served the sacred liturgies, as well as to Mr. Nicholas Botkins and the Oratory choir, in particular for their rendition of Victoria’s O Quam Gloriosam Mass setting.

Mass was followed by a joyful reception with the confirmed and their families and friends.  The faithful of the Oratory had a chance greet and thank Archbishop Carlson for his pastoral solicitude for the Oratory community.  The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest thanks His Grace for his continued support of our work in St. Louis.

Deo gratias for the many blessings received!

After a much-needed refreshing rain on Friday, God blessed the day of Confirmation with a California-blue sky. On Saturday October 15, forty-one candidates received the sacrament of Confirmation from His Excellency, the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, at St. Margaret Mary Church, Oakland. Reverend Canon William Avis, Rector of the Oratory of St. Gianna in Tucson, served as Master of Ceremonies.

Bishop Barber gave St. Philip Neri to the 2016 confirmandi as an example. He described how the saint's heart was physically enlarged because of his love for God and how this was to be an example for us, to love God with great devotion and fervor. The bishop also talked about the challenges which young people encounter in our days. He spoke about the word “Fear," which is often accompanied by anxieties and worries that paralyze the vigor of our spiritual life. He said that we need to remember this: What effect did the descent of the Holy Ghost have upon the Apostles? They were truly confirmed, and their will came entirely under the sway of the Holy Ghost so that they fearlessly preached the Gospel to the world. The Holy Ghost takes away fear and makes us firm in our faith.  Not only confirmands but all present at the Confirmation were encouraged and strengthened by Bishop Barber's words, which were spoken with episcopal authority with his miter on his head and crosier in hand.

After Confirmation, in the presence of His Excellency, a Solemn High Mass was celebrated by the Reverend Canon Matthew Talarico, the Provincial of the Institute for the U.S., assisted by Canon Raphael Ueda from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory, San Jose, as deacon, and Abbé Kevin Kerscher from St. Margaret Mary Church, Oakland, as subdeacon. At the Mass, the confirmands, their sponsors, their parents, and their friends altogether praised and thanked the Lord for the graces of Confirmation.

The celebration concluded with a reception after Mass in the church hall, where Reverend Canon Olivier Meney, as the Institute priest responsible for the Oakland apostolate, welcomed all participants in this beautiful event. A bountiful and festive dinner was prepared by the confirmands' families. All enjoyed the refreshment and the warm fellowship.  Thanks be to God for this wonderful day!

His Excellency Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson, Arizona, visited St. Gianna Oratory and Holy Family Parish for Confirmations.   The Confirmations and Low Mass of a Bishop took place on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00p.m. During this ceremony the Bishop administered the sacrament of confirmation to 30 people. The ages of those who were confirmed varied between 11 and 84. This included Mrs. Alberta Sasaki who recently converted to the Catholic Faith.

Canon Matthew Talarico, Provincial Superior and Canon William Avis, Rector of St. Gianna Oratory and Administrator of Holy Family Parish served as Chaplains to the Bishop. Abbe Matthew O'Hora, Clerical Oblate based in Tucson acted as Master of Ceremonies.  Afterwards there was a celebration social in the Church Basement, during which a presentation and word of thanks was made to His Excellency Bishop Kicanas.

Most of these confirmation candidates have been a part of our weekly Confirmation Preparation classes for the last two years. A special word of thanks is due to the teachers who prepared them. Namely, Mrs. Gina Hann, Mrs. Sylvia Cordova, and Mrs. Ana Aranda.

We continue to pray for those who have been confirmed and ask God to keep them strong in their faith!

The Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Chicago, conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation upon fifteen young people from the Shrine of Christ the King on Saturday, October 22. This sacramental celebration took place in the spacious St. Thomas the Apostle Church located near the fire-damaged Shrine (special thanks to the pastor, Father Elias O’Brien O. Carm). Following the Confirmations, Bishop Perry celebrated solemn Pontifical votive Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Renaissance choral music and Gregorian Chant. With deep appreciation, the Institute of Christ the King thanks His Excellency, Bishop Perry, for his continual support of its growing apostolate at the Shrine. Congratulations to the newly-confirmed!
